February is National Snack Month! While National Snack Month originally started as a marketing scheme for increased sales in February, this month is a great opportunity to remind everyone that HEALTHY snacking is important all year round. Snacking is a good way to keep our energy up, and as an added bonus, it provides us with all the necessary vitamins and minerals our bodies need everyday. Healthy snacks are especially important for children as they grow, but adults can enjoy snacks too! Snacks can curb our appetite, helping us to avoid overeating at mealtime, to improve our mood, and to keep us at a healthy weight. 1-2 snacks per day is a good amount.
Just remember, don’t waste your snacking on nutrient-poor foods such as chips, cookies, candy bars, and soda. These snacks can raise our blood sugar to unhealthy levels and make us more tired in the long-run. Make your snack options smart!
